Melilla is one of two Spanish enclaves nestled along the North African coast, and it's by far the most isolated. Surrounded by Morocco and near to the Algerian border, its geographical position is distinctive to say the least.
Situated in the heart of the city, our clinic comprised five dedicated treatment areas, frequently bustling with patients.
The enclave's one public hospital grappled with overcrowding and insufficient funding, while the performance of local clinic medical staff often fell short of expectations. Consequently, a significant number of our patients arrived bearing the burden of long-term chronic illness.
Across 10 years I treated many individuals, some of whom were medical staff themselves. And for three of those years, I conducted an in-depth study of the application, techniques, and results of 3,205 Gua sha treatments which I performed in the clinic on a total of 430 patients.
The conditions I encountered were vast and varied, but the most prevalent were joint pain, fibromyalgia, fatigue, back pain, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
The weight of responsability of improving the quality of life of those who had been let down by the medical system pushed me on to research, study, and delve deeper than ever before. It was during my time in this extraordinary yet challenging setting that I honed the techniques I'd like to share with you today.

Gua sha is often overlooked and denied the spotlight, deemed as supplementary treatment, that be due to either a general misunderstanding of its practices or its lack of coverage in conventional Traditional Chinese Medicine education.
We can trace this general ignorance surrounding the subject to Gua sha's humble and folkloric bloodline. Gua sha and even its counterparts in other areas of Asia - like Kerokan in Indonesia - are toolsets of knowledge and techniques passed down orally from generation to generation. These practices are rooted in family or local traditions rather the esteemed halls of the Literati, where practices are meticulously documented. Consequently, systematized compliations of knowledge, which form the backbone formal education is built upon, are scarce to come across.
But the reality is that Gua sha is a standalone treatment. It earned its stripes in the trenches of 16th and 17th century China battling febrile disease, and withstood the test of time. And coupled with the secrets of the Huangdi Neijing and a modern understanding of its effects, it is truly like unlocking cheat mode.
The level of change you can bring about with Gua sha is, in my experience, unparallelled.
One of the main things that differentiates Gua sha are the effects that derive from the very distinctive red marks (sha) that are produced after the unique "scraping" takes place. And no, those marks are not toxins or bad energy. The sha marks, also known as petechiae, are blood cells which have leaked into the extravascular space beneath the skin due to the dynamic pressure applied by the Gua sha tool.
The secrets or magic of Gua sha's effctiveness actually lies in the way our bodies reacts to sha. That discoloration is actually telling you exactly why Gua sha is different. The sha is transformed by the body over the following days in a process that results in the release of enzymes, chemicals, and anti-inflammatory agents that have a noticeable effect on reducing inflammation and enhancing immunity.

Founder of the Komorebi Institute
The first thing you should know is that Gua sha is more than a trend for me; it's my life's work, spanning over three decades and culminating in the authorship of 5 books on Gua sha and and Chinese medicine translated to 6 languages. My passion for Gua sha began with treating my two sons when they were just toddlers (they're now grown men), and has since extended to thousands worldwide, including through a non-profit Gua sha education program we established in Sri Lanka.
As a Licensed Acupuncturist and Health Promotion Specialist (MS), my journey has been unconventional. It started with a degree in International Development & Economics and early experiences in rehabilitation programs in Uganda.
My path then led me to the remote Japanese island of Yakushima, where I immersed myself in nature's wonders, setting the foundation for my unique approach to Gua sha.
This was followed by a decade in North Africa, where I established and ran a chronic illness clinic, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in Gua sha's applications.
Now based in a serene Spanish forest, I have distilled my diverse experiences and knowledge into a revolutionary new approach: Ecology in Motion™ Gua sha. This innovative method seamlessly blends traditional Chinese medicine, modern anatomy, and natural science.
My promise to you is this: the knowledge and skills you'll gain in my courses go beyond anything you've ever encountered in other Gua sha courses.
